Storyline

China lifting its per capita gross domestic product (GDP) to the level of over 10,000 U.S. dollars marked a major progress in human history, and it is noteworthy that Chinese households are benefiting from the economic expansion, relevant experts and officials have said.

China's economy grew 6.1 percent year on year in 2019, within the government's annual target of 6 to 6.5 percent, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Friday.

Ning Jizhe, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission and director of the National Bureau of Statistics, said at a briefing in Beijing that China's per capita GDP surpassed 10,000 U.S. dollars in 2019.

"China's per capita GDP in 2001 was over 1,000 U.S. dollars, and the number rose to the level of 10,000 U.S. dollars in 2019, with the annual average growth rate exceeding 8.5 percent, that's among the fastest globally," said Jin Hong, deputy director of the Department of National Accounts of the National Bureau of Statistics.

Relevant 2018 data from the World Bank showed that the total population of countries with a per capita GDP of 10,000 U.S. dollars and above was around 1.6 billion.

"And China, a major country with a population of 1.4 billion, has also lifted its per capita GDP to the level of over 10,000 U.S. dollars, meaning that the total global population in this regard now reaches 3 billion. It is undoubtedly a major progress in human history," said Wang Changlin, director of the Academy of Macroeconomic Research under the National Development and Reform Commission.

"China lifting its per capita GDP to over 10,000 U.S. dollars has sent an important signal to the Chinese society and the international community that China is able to achieve strides forward for its population of over one billion on the development path that suits its own national conditions. China has achieved a miracle in its economic growth," said Wang Wen, Executive Dean of the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at Renmin University of China.

"It does show how much achievement China has had over the past few decades of reform and opening-up. So the fact that households are actually benefiting from the economic growth is very noteworthy," said UN Resident Coordinator in China Nicholas Rosellini.

Wang Changlin said China is now able to better improve the living standards of its people.

"Now our country is able to spend more government budgets on improving basic public services including and involving health care, education and science and technology, so as to help people feel more satisfied, happier, and more secure," he said.

He called the breakthrough in per capita GDP a starting point for China to deal with development challenges including different developing conditions in different regions.
