Storyline

Central China's Hubei Province on Friday launched its highest first-level public health emergency over the current coronavirus outbreak in the region, according to local authorities.

Wuhan started construction of a new special hospital for coronavirus-infected patients on Thursday night. The construction is expected to complete by Feb. 3 and the new hospital is expected to house 1,000 beds.

Before the hospital opens, 15 local hospitals were designated to receive critically ill patients with fever of unknown reason.

Medical staff of other local hospitals have all gone through trainings and been devoted to the battle against the viral pneumonia.

At first we mainly relied on physician from the infectious disease and respiratory department, but soon we realized the task was quite overwhelming, so we mobilized all doctors in our hospital, including surgeons and anesthetists. They have all received training for their job at the frontline," said Wang Wei, director of Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

The disease was first reported in Wuhan, capital of Hubei, in December 2019.

Hubei Province also implemented emergency plans for medicine and food to ensure stable supplies.

In Wuhan's largest fresh vegetable and fruit warehouse, 300 tons of vegetables and fruits arrived on Friday alone. The warehouse now has an inventory of over 1,000 tons of vegetables and fruits respectively, around 40 percent higher than that of normal level.

"Now we have abundant inventory of everyday vegetables, like potatoes and Chinese cabbages. Our inventory is enough for at least three days of supply," said Wang Yujing, deputy general manager of fresh food department of Zhongbai Warehouse Supermarket Co., Ltd.

On Thursday, authorities suspended all means of transport in and out of Wuhan at the peak of the Chinese New Year travel rush, putting the central Chinese city of 11 million people on a lockdown.
