Storyline

People in the United Kingdom have divided views on the future of the country even as it officially left the European Union on Friday night after years of political turmoil.

The UK now enters an 11-month transitional period post-Brexit, during which time the UK and the EU will start more detailed negotiations on trade, immigration, security and other issues.

Celebrations of various sizes were held across the UK on Friday evening, with Brexit supporters in jubilant mood as the official departure time of 23:00 approached. In London, large crowds gathered, with UK flags hung on each flagpole in Parliament Square.

Brexit supporters held aloft banners and flags to celebrate their long awaited moment, with many believing the United Kingdom has a positive future ahead.

"I think we've got a very, very positive future. We will be able to trade with the rest of the world freely. I am very excited for our future. We retain our sovereignty, we will be able to make our own decisions, our own laws, control our own migration policy," said Brexit supporter David Waller.

However, many others were also dismayed by the UK's exit form the EU, with remainer Stephen Fenwick expressing his discontent and worry about the uncertain future facing the UK.

"People don't realize that without the EU, we would collapse and go [down]. That's why I voted to remain, and that's why I am passionately saying I'm supporting remain even though we are leaving today. I am so upset, I'm so absolutely passionately upset that we are leaving. We should have stayed. And where will we go now? I don't know. We are now in a Pandora's box of not knowing where we are going to go," said Fenwick.

Besides the celebrations, anti-Brexit protests and demonstrations were also held in many parts of the UK, as the country remains torn by an issue which has polarized the nation since the referendum in June 2016.
