"In the early days of the outbreak in Wuhan, the first batch of nine hospitals were designated to carry out the relevant works. As the epidemic has spread, so far, Wuhan has now expanded to more than 10 hospitals which are capable of carrying out this test, and also added more third-party detection institutions to help with nucleic acid testing. Now, there are nearly 20 hospitals which can do the test, according to the newly-issued notice on January 27 by Hubei Province. And there are more than ten, almost 20 third-party detection institutions which are able to provide this service for medical institutions."

Storyline

Over 30 medical institutions are now capable of completing nucleic acid tests to identify novel coronavirus and diagnose patients in central China's Wuhan City, while more than 6,000 medical workers have been sent to help the country's worst-hit province, according to National Health Committee authorities on Friday.

The outbreak of viral pneumonia caused by the novel coronavirus has resulted in 259 deaths as of 00:00 Saturday, with 11,791 confirmed cases on the Chinese mainland, with many of the cases concentrated in Wuhan City and in other cities across Hubei Province.

To identify the virus source, the nucleic acid test applies a throat swab culture method which is an effective and timely way to reach a diagnosis in a short time.

As the virus began to spread, China has acted to increase the number of qualified medical facilities which can identify the coronavirus, with now more than 30 medical institutions being available to perform nucleic acid tests, according to Xing Ruoqi, deputy director of the medical administration department under National Health Commission.

"In the early days of the outbreak in Wuhan, the first batch of nine hospitals were designated to carry out the relevant work. And there are more than 10, almost 20 third-party detection institutions which are able to provide this service for medical institutions," said Xing.

As the outbreak has intensified, Wuhan and its neighboring cities have been facing severe medical shortages. To address this pressing issue, several batches of voluntary medical teams totaling more than 6,000 medical workers from various provinces nationwide have been deployed to help support medical workers in Hubei Province.

"The medical teams have been arranged in prefecture-level cities, for example, the cities of Huanggang and Xiaogan were supported with medical teams. The second batch of medical teams arrived on January 25, and were subsequently arranged downwards to prefecture-level cities. Now, national medical teams from various provinces have been deployed to about 10 neighboring prefecture-level cities of Wuhan. Now they mainly support grade III first-class hospitals in prefecture-level cities that can better focus on receiving and treating patients," said Xing.
