Storyline

China's transport authorities have beefed up scrutiny and disinfection at expressways toll gates, airports and train stations to prevent and control the spread of the pneumonia caused by a novel coronavirus, amid a peak in return trips after the Spring Festival holiday season.

Railway stations across the country started to meet a peak in return trips from Saturday after the planned week-long Lunar New Year holiday season that began on Jan. 24 was extended to Feb. 2 as a measure to contain the novel coronavirus outbreak.

In Harbin, the capital city of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, the railway's disease prevention and control workers donned protective suits, gloves and shoe covers before boarding a train to start their disinfection and sterilization work.

They first sprayed disinfectants on the surface of objects in the compartment and into the air. They also sterilized washbasins and toilets and applied disinfection to the crowded carriages with hard seats twice.

"We disinfect every train after it pulls in. To cut off viral transmission is the most important means of controlling infectious diseases, so we have to take this key step," said Li Qudan, an official of the disease control and prevention center under the China Railway Harbin Group.

In southwest China's Sichuan Province, the local traffic administration has adopted a string of measures to prevent and control the epidemic at expressways' toll stations, rest areas and bus stations, including having drivers and passengers of passing vehicles take temperature, helping them disinfect cars and recording the relevant data.

Return trips via the province's expressways dropped by about 70 percent during the Spring Festival travel rush from the previous year as a result of the outbreak of the viral pneumonia since mid-December. Yet, over recent days, there has been a sharp increase in return trips for resuming work in the provincial capital city of Chengdu.

"We have set up 570 epidemic prevention checkpoints throughout the province in coordination with local public security departments, traffic police, health and epidemic prevention and control authorities. We have also set up 16 key mandatory epidemic prevention checkpoints on highways around the provincial capital city of Chengdu in cooperation with the local epidemic prevention and control headquarters to ensure every passing vehicle will be inspected and no one is missed out," said Zhao Haidong, head of the operation management office with the highway administration under the Department of Transportation of Sichuan Province.

To curb the spread of the new coronavirus, all passengers entering Shanghai via expressways, airports and train stations are required to fill in a health form starting from Saturday.

At a video meeting Saturday, the traffic management bureau of the Ministry of Public Security said that without permission, no departments or individuals are allowed to close expressways, block the national and provincial trunk roads or set up roadblocks on highways to block passing vehicles, so that emergency supplies and production and living materials can be transported.
