Storyline

Approved by Chairman of the Central Military Commission Xi Jinping, 1,400 medical staff from the armed forces are tasked with treating patients in the Huoshenshan Hospital in Wuhan starting from Monday.

Huoshenshan Hospital, with a capacity of 1,000 beds, is a hospital dedicated to treating patients infected with the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV). The construction of this hospital started on Jan 24, and it will be put into operation on Monday.

On Sunday, eight military aircraft transported the medical workers and medical supplies to Tianhe Airport in Wuhan.

The medics consist of 950 people from hospitals affiliated to the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Joint Logistic Support Force, and 450 from medical universities of the army, navy and air force of the PLA who were sent to Wuhan earlier.

Meanwhile, a joint expert group of 15 people has also been set up to guide the hospital's epidemic prevention and control on the spot.

Among the military medical staff, many have participated in the fight against SARS in Beijing's Xiaotangshan Hospital in 2003 or in the anti-Ebola mission in Sierra Leone and Liberia, and have rich experience in treating infectious diseases.

"I joined the fight against SARS in 2003 and the fought against Ebola in 2014. I must take the lead in the tough battle where the motherland needs me. I’m confident to finish the task successfully with my expertise and rich experience," said Wang Qi, a medical worker.

"I hope that all the Chinese people will rest assured as the People's Liberation Army will not retreat from the epidemic in any case and will guarantee their safety and health. When the country needs us, it is the time for us, the servicemen to prove our value. The last thing we want to see is that our people have to suffer from such hardship. But when they are in trouble, we are obliged to help them," said Ma Ling, another medical worker.

As of 24:00 on Saturday, the National Health Commission had received reports of a total of 14,380 confirmed cases in 31 provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, of which 2,110 remained in critical condition, and 304 had lost their lives. A total of 328 people have been discharged from hospital, and 19,544 people are suspected of being infected with the virus.
