Storyline

With the first new hospital in Wuhan dedicated solely to treating the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) patients began to receive patients Tuesday morning, the second one is expected to be completed on Wednesday.

The basic construction of the project has been completed on Tuesday, the 9th day of its construction. The lifting and installation of the remaining box-style medical wards are underway.

"The biggest difficulties of our Leishenshan project lie in two points. The first is that it happens during the Spring Festival holiday, and the second is that it collides with the epidemic outbreak. All the workers have gone home, and the roads in and out of the city have been closed. These are the two biggest difficulties," said Duan Xuyang, chief engineer of the Leishenshan Hospital construction project.

When disaster struck, help came from all sides. To solve the problem of shortage of insulation materials, the Huamei Energy-saving Technology Group Co., Ltd from north China's Hebei Province sent the hospital 2,032 packages of insulation material and 428 barrels of glue, helping accelerate the completion of the hospital.

"Up to now, this project has been carrying out day and night for nearly a week. Now, more than 80 percent of the total project volume has been completed, and the project has entered into the final handover phase. Among them, two building of No. 6 and No.7 are ready for use with water and electricity supply," said Xu Jianzhong, commander of the mechanical and electrical installation project.

Construction workers have been working round the clock to meet the target.

Plans for the hospital have undergone ten drafts, putting tremendous pressure on the teams working hard to get the hospital up and running.

"Time is so tight. The designs have changed rapidly, according to both our progress and the developing epidemic. Our due date is coming soon. We are working 24 hours nonstop," said Xiang Hongjun, procurement manager of the China Construction No. 3 Engineering Bureau.

The hospital has been specially design to prevent medical workers from getting infected. Corridors, wards for patients, washrooms, and semi-contaminated zones have four levels of pressure. Air only flows from safe high pressure areas to lower pressure areas, which are infected. The system is designed so viruses cannot escape from the wards.

"Ordinary hospitals don't have functions like this, meaning there's usually a higher possibility of cross-infections taking place. But professional hospitals built for treating infections like this one have a sophisticated air-flow system," said Yin Kui, chief engineer of China Construction Third Engineering Bureau.

China adopted a similar design to the newly built hospital seventeen years ago to combat SARS. But the technology used these days is even more advanced, raising hopes that it could make a difference on the frontlines.

The 1,500-bed hospital, which has an area of 202,700 square meters, will be put into use on Feb. 5.
