Storyline

Wuhan, the epicenter of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) outbreak in central China, has converted a large public space, a convention center and a stadium in the city into three makeshift hospitals since Monday to specifically and collectively treat patients with mild symptoms of the disease.

Respectively, the temporary hospitals were converted from the Wuhan International Exhibition Center, the Hongshan Gymnasium and the China Culture Exhibition Center, which will provide 4,000 beds in total.

Altogether, 20 national emergency medical teams consisting about 2,380 staff were involved in the building of the hospitals that are equipped with 173 medical vehicles, examination area, hospitalization area and relating relief supplies and medicines.

Also, the three hospitals are equipped with movable P3 labs for virus tests.

The national emergency medical teams are organized for major emergencies. The medical capacity of a national emergency medical team is equal to a medium-level hospital.

"We are confident in winning the fight against the novel coronavirus," said Zhao Song, head of the national emergency medical team from central China's Henan Province.

After arriving at the center of the epidemic, the teams unpacked and assembled a hospital that is designed to operate in the field.

Each module is an individual medical or logistic unit with a special function. When put together, the modules become a fully-equipped mobile hospital.

"We've brought nine trucks here, including a mobile intensive care unit, a water truck, and a command center. They'll guarantee that the mobile hospital operates smoothly," said Chen Xiaonan, deputy head of the national emergency medical team from south China's Hainan Province.

Earlier, 400 workers worked around the clock to convert this exhibition center into a temporary hospital in less than a day.

"We've pooled all of the city's manpower to work here for 24 hours non-stop," said Chen Qiubo, deputy general manager of Wuhan International Conference and Exhibition Center.

About 500 medical personnel, including some from local hospitals, are expected to attend to 1,800 patients to be received at the exhibition center-turned hospital.
