Storyline

Small slips of notes between medical workers and the quarantined patients suffering the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in the Haihe Hospital in China's Tianjin Municipality have become a bond of support and encouragement in the battle against the viral pneumonia outbreak.

After receiving the first confirmed case of novel coronavirus infection, nurses of the first inpatient area for infectious diseases of the Haihe Hospital found that the patient did not have the time to prepare daily necessities for the quarantine and treatment. So head nurse Liu Chunrong told the patient to leave notes on the window of the ward explaining what he wanted, so that the nurses would solve the problems for the patient.

Now the small slips of notes have become a routine of the inpatient area.

After a night shift, physician Liu Cong found a new note saying that one patient wanted to eat bread with raisins. She immediately helped contact the logistics department of the hospital which then brought the bread.

Besides getting necessities for the patients, the medical staff also wanted to give confidence and hope to the patients.

"Even a patient wants a life necessity like a towel and we bring it to him timely, he will feel like we are his family, and that he is not alone here," said head nurse Liu Chunrong.

"When I learned that my nucleic acid test for the novel coronavirus was positive, I felt depressed and cried a little. And the medical workers saw me weeping. Then I told myself that I should cooperate with them in the treatment, which would be the best payback to their hard work," said a patient at the hospital in a phone interview.

The medical workers are also receiving kind gestures from the patients.

Every time she had to cough, she would turn her back at us and said 'Please stay away while I'm coughing.' And we medical workers are really moved by patients like this," said physician Liu Cong.

"Thank you for your selfless efforts!" "Please protect yourselves well!" "We fight together!" Notes between the patients and the medical workers show their resolution in winning the battle against the virus.

"Because of these small trickles of warmth, we feel very happy though our work is exhausting. People here are making joint efforts, standing together to do one thing," said Liu Cong.
