China's National Health Commission (NHC) expressed its deep condolences over the death of Li Wenliang, a doctor in the battle against the novel coronavirus in Wuhan.

"Li Wenliang, a doctor from the Central Hospital of Wuhan, Hubei Province, was infected with novel coronavirus pneumonia during the fight against the epidemic, died despite all-out treatment. The National Health Commission expresses the deep condolences and expresses sincere sympathy to Li's family," said Chinese National Health Commission's spokeswoman Song Shuli at a press briefing Friday afternoon.

Li, 34, passed away in the early hours of Friday after being infected with the virus despite the best efforts of doctors. His death has triggered an outpouring of grief nationwide.

The NHC spokeswoman also expressed great respects to medical personnel on the front line of epidemic control.

"Since the outbreak of the epidemic, medical staff of great majority have been risen to the challenge and fought against the epidemic on the front line in disregard of great personal risks and their own families, making a great contribution to protecting people. We express great respect to them," Song added.

The total confirmed cases of novel coronavirus infection on the Chinese mainland had reached 31,161 by the end of Thursday, the NHC said, noting that a total of 636 people had died of the disease.
