Storyline

The China Media Group (CMG) put on a special television show for this year's Lantern Festival on Saturday, paying tribute to frontline medical staff fighting against the novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP) epidemic.

Due to the spread of the epidemic, this year's show didn't invite audience, the first of its kind since it was started over 30 years ago.

The 2020 Lantern Festival gala presented by the China Central Television (CCTV) was broadcast on CCTV-1 at 20:06 Beijing time on Saturday and available on other portals.

The gala showed the strong spirit of the Chinese people working together to weather difficulties and the great cohesion of the Chinese nation.

Netizens expressed their enthusiasm for the gala, saying that "we are united with 1.4 billion people together."

During the show, six famous anchors of China Central Television recited a poem out loud to tell the stories of ordinary Chinese people guarding the frontline of epidemic control.

Songs with a theme on China showed the tenacity and perseverance of the Chinese nation as well as articulated the firm determination and confidence of the Chinese people to fight against the epidemic in the face of difficulties.

Since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus in mid-December, more than 800 people had lost their lives as of Saturday across China. The central Chinese city of Wuhan is the epicenter of the epidemic.

The Lantern Festival is a time-honored traditional Chinese festival. It falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month marking the end of the Spring Festival, and people usually celebrate it together.
