Storyline

As more cases of the novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP) emerge, there are over 80 emergency stations in the downtown Wuhan, the epicenter of the viral outbreak.

The emergency stations are busy day and night. But equally under immense pressure are the medics, who need to work on a 24/7 schedule.

Song He, a doctor at the Wuhan Emergency Medical Center, was assigned to pick up a patient thought to have had a heart attack.

The call said that the patient, an elderly lady, had some breathing difficulties. But Song needed to check if the patient had a fever before leaving. So she called back to ask about whether the lady had other symptoms like a fever or cough besides breathing difficulties.

Upon learning that the patient only had a runny nose, Song and her co-workers still decided to bring some protective clothing with them as a precaution.

"Just as the patient's relative described, the patient got a runny nose in the past two weeks with symptoms of a cold, although her major symptoms now are of having a sense of suppression in the chest and breathing difficulties. She reported that she has heart disease, but we cannot rule out the possibility of the novel coronavirus pneumonia," said Song,

It only takes about 10 minutes to drive from the emergency center to the apartment building. But it took quite a while to find the exact location of the patient, as the two elderly people did not answer their calls.

Their daughter did not stay with them due to an isolation quarantine order issued by local authorities. When the daughter learned that her mother went unconscious due to heart disease, she made the emergency call.

Upon meeting the patient, the medical team found a different set of circumstances than what the daughter had described. They discovered the patient had an ongoing fever for three days. Song immediately asked all her team members to put on protective suits but did not wear one herself. They headed to the Wuhan Union Hospital, one of the 28 local hospitals designated for NCP treatment.

"I already had physical contact with the patient when I realized that she was showing some pneumonia symptoms. I measured her body temperature, tested her blood pressure and gave her oxygen intake. It makes no sense to wear protective clothing after having physical contact with her, But I must continue and send her to the hospital. I can disinfect myself after I come back," said Song.

The disinfection process has strict normative procedures. The hand washing procedure alone includes seven steps. And it is no easy thing to remove the protective gear.

"There is nothing to be afraid of as long as we take proper safety measures. I was thinking we'd send the patient to the hospital as soon as possible for isolation and treatment. By doing that we can keep the infection sources under control," said Song.

Doctor Song's husband Yong Yongquan is also a doctor, who has been doing administrative work at the emergency center.

He reminded her wife of protecting herself and having enough rest. He said that he often counsels his wife and encourages her to get rest often.

"For example, we should believe in our country. We can win the battle again the virus, we win the battle against the epidemic with the support from all Chinese people," said Yong.

Hundreds of thousands of other medical workers in Wuhan deal with suspected and confirmed cases every single day, What keeps them going is their faith in saving lives and the determination to unite as one.

Song, together with her colleagues strongly believe that the victory will come soon.
