Storyline

The Japanese government said Thursday that some elderly passengers on the novel coronavirus-hit cruise ship quarantined in Yokohama will be allowed to disembark as early as Friday.

A total of 200 passengers over the age of 80 with other diseases who have tested negative for the virus could choose to get off the ship, depending on their health conditions and wishes, Japan's Health Minister Katsunobu Kato told a press briefing.

There are some people whose health may deteriorate by staying aboard for an extended period, Kato said, adding that the age limit will be lowered for people to disembark.

Those who are permitted to leave early will still be quarantined in government-prepared facilities, the government said.

"From February 14, elderly people over 80 will be arranged to disembark. Besides, passengers living in rooms without windows or in rooms with windows that cannot be opened, and those suffering from basic diseases, if confirmed to be free of the new coronavirus after receiving medical check and wish to disembark, are permitted to be transferred to the government-prepared facilities before the quarantine period ends," an official from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare said.

Around 3,500 people are still confined to the Diamond Princess, health ministry officials said, adding that the two-week isolation period will end on Feb. 19.

According to the latest data from the health ministry, 218 people on board have been confirmed to be infected with the virus, bringing the total of confirmed cases in Japan to 247.

From Feb. 5, the swimming pool, hot springs, cinemas and other entertainment facilities on the cruise ship have been closed, and most of the passengers on board can only be confined to their cabins. In order to help passengers kill time, the cruise provides a free network to broadcast movies, TV shows and other programs. Some passengers also continuously update their "quarantine diaries" via social media.

Among the passengers is 74-year-old British man David Abel. He was isolated on board with his wife. He continues to broadcast live on the web every day to introduce the situation on board.

"We are OK. We are doing alright, feeling a little bit jaded but that's because of a whole night's lack of sleep. Whenever we hear news like that and especially when the 80-year-olds are being split as couples on board - it's happening every single day, and now it's all age groups," said David.

As of Thursday, the Diamond Princess cruise liner which carries 3,700 passengers had been quarantined for nine days. The Japanese government said whether to check the entire crew on the ship depends on the actual inspection capabilities, and currently only the people who have a higher risk of infection can be checked.
