Storyline

Chinese health authorities on Friday said it received reports of 5,090 new confirmed cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection and 121 deaths on Thursday from 31 provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps.

Mi Feng, spokesman of the National Health Commission, introduced the official data at a press conference.

"From 00:00 to 24:00 of Thursday, the provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps reported 5,090 new confirmed cases, 2,174 new severe cases, and 121 new deaths of which 116 were in Hubei, two in Heilongjiang and one respectively in Anhui, Henan and Chongqing. There were 2,450 new suspected cases," said Mi.

On Thursday, a total of 1,081 people were discharged from hospital, and 26,9095 close contacts were discharged from medical observation, he added.

Mi also introduced the overall data relevant to the epidemic so far.

"As of 24:00 on Thursday, there were 55,748 confirmed cases in the provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, including 10,204 severe cases. A total of 6,723 people had been discharged from hospital after recovery, with 269 cuts from Hubei after examination; 1,380 people had died of the disease, with 108 cuts from Hubei due to double-counting," said Mi.

The total confirmed cases had reached 63,851, with 1,043 cuts from Hubei after examination; 10,109 people have been suspected of being infected with the virus. A total of 493,067 close contacts had been traced, with 177,984 still under medical observation, according to Mi.

"[By the end of Thursday], 81 confirmed cases had been reported in China's Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, of which 53 in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 10 in the Macao SAR and 18 in Taiwan," said Mi.

Hubei, center of the novel coronavirus outbreak, reported 4,823 new confirmed cases, 690 people discharged from hospital and 116 new deaths on Thursday. The total confirmed cases in Hubei were 51,986, of which 35,991 in Wuhan. Hubei had 6,169 suspected cases by the end of Thursday, according to Mi.

Mi emphasized that the number of confirmed cases in Hubei includes clinically diagnosed cases -those with pneumonia-related computerized tomography scan results but not yet tested positive for the virus as confirmed cases. He stressed that this is aimed to ensure timely treatment for more patients and reduce severe cases and death.

Meanwhile, the number of new confirmed cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) recorded outside the epicenter of Hubei Province has been dropping for 10 consecutive days from 890 on Feb. 3 to 267 on Thursday, which reflects that the previous prevention and controlling measures are effective, Mi said at the press briefing.
