Storyline

China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi and the head of the WHO both addressed the work being done to combat the coronavirus disease or COVID-19 on a national and international level, as it was treated as a point of focus on the second day of 56th Munich Security Conference (MSC) in the Bavarian capital on Saturday.

A round of applause accompanied conference chairman Wolfgang Ischinger's support for China as he welcomed Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

"China has undertaken a huge effort to fight what has become a huge medical challenge. And I think China deserves a little bit of compassion and cooperation and encouragement," said Wolfgang Ischinger, chairman of the MSC.

In his conference speech, Wang thanked the thousand of people who have worked diligently to build and work in hospitals and the more than 100 countries and international organizations that have given China their support. He assured them all that the challenge will soon be over.

"China's rigorous and thorough measures are paying off. As of February the 14th the number of new confirmed cases outside Hubei has recorded a 12 day consecutive drop. And the outbreak in Hubei and Wuhan is managed more effectively indicating that overall, the epidemic is controllable," said Wang Yi, China's Foreign Minister.

He then went on to address the concerns of economies dependent on China.

"The Chinese economy is well-positioned to overcome all risks and challenges, the fundamentals sustaining sound economic growth have not changed and will not change. After the storm, comes the rainbow," said Wang.

Participants at a morning session organized by the World Health Organization (WHO), voiced support for China's efforts to combat COVID-19, but also reinforced the need for international support.

"Some of the Rhetoric has not been helpful. China has a strong public health system demonstrated. China has a strong scientific and discovery system. China has the capacity to develop and scale up vaccine production, so we need to work with China," said Michael Ryan, Executive Director of the Health Emergencies Programme under the WHO.

It's being reported that close to 26,000 medical workers have been sent to help in central China's Hubei Province, the epicenter of the virus.

The WHO have also sent a technical committee to China to work with Chinese colleagues on a collaborated response.

As many speakers at the MSC have pointed out, successfully fighting COVID-19 cannot be left to China alone. It requires a unified multilateral approach. As previous epidemics have proven, medical challenges know no borders and show people how truly interconnected the world it.
