Storyline

On the frontline of the fight against the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, many doctors have been cooperating with each other to save the lives of more patients infected by virus, in Wuhan City of central China's Hubei Province, the epicenter of the outbreak.

Fang Minghao, deputy director of the department of emergency and intensive care unit (ICU) at the Tongji Hospital in Wuhan, is one of the many devoted doctors who have fully plunged themselves into the ongoing nationwide campaign to fight the epidemic.

Fang joined a team of medical staff from around the country a month ago, and began to support the work in the ICU of the Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital. With more than 20 years of experience working in ICU, Fang has helped other doctors adapt to the work faster.

"ICU wasn't my first major, however, I have mastered the basic skills in a short time after Director Fang came here. The Party members should always fight on the frontline, and we are here to protect our homes," said Long Xin, a surgeon of the hepatology department at the Tongji Hospital.

"Everyone has shown their sense of pride in their profession and their capabilities during work. When you ask someone for something, they usually say 'no problem' to you," said Fang.

Medical staff, from doctors to nurses, play an irreplaceable role in many ways, including diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of patients, as patients' condition changes constantly in ICU.

Teamwork is all about supporting each other, said Fang.

As protective suits are still lacking, many doctors are wearing industrial protective suits, which are heavier and more airtight, in order to save more medical protective suits for nurses.

"The industrial protective suits are about twice as heavy as the medical one, and it's like taking a sauna inside the industrial protective suits," said Fang.

With the joint efforts of all the medical staff in the ICU, more than 10 critically ill patients in Fang's working area have been transferred to regular wards.
