Storyline

The medical staff at the Wuhan Wuchang Hospital have vowed to carry on the legacy of their late president Liu Zhiming, a veteran doctor who had devoted his life to the fight against the novel coronavirus pneumonia outbreak and passed away after contracting with the virus on Tuesday morning.

Liu, 51, a neurosurgeon by training, became infected while working to combat the novel coronavirus.

Since the outbreak of the highly contagious virus officially known as COVID-19, Liu, without regard for his personal safety, led all medical personnel of Wuchang Hospital on the front line to fight against the epidemic, making important contributions to the city's epidemic prevention and control efforts, according to the municipal health commission of central China's Wuhan City -- the epicenter of the epidemic outbreak since mid-December which has killed more than 2,100 people in China so far.

"I remember Liu called me on the morning of Jan. 25. He said to me, 'We need to better protect the medical staff. Don't let them get too tired, so else their immune systems could easily be compromised if they are working overtime,'" said Zhang Weidong, head of emergency service at Wuhan Wuchang Hospital.

But at that time, Liu was already admitted to the ICU at his own hospital. On Jan. 24, his CT scan showed serious infection on his lungs and his nucleic acid test turned out positive.

Even as a patient himself, Liu still worried about his staff and patients, and made lots of calls to ensure all work was proceeding. He told his colleagues that he looked forward to fighting alongside them after he was recovered.

"My eyes were instantly welled up with tears. I said to him, 'You are a patient yourself but you are still worrying about us. There's nothing else I want to say to you except two things. First, I promise to complete the tasks you have entrusted to me, and second, please do take care of yourself and get well as soon as possible,'" said Zhang.

Liu's wife is a head nurse in the Third Hospital of Wuhan. After her husband got infected, she wanted to take care of Liu herself but Liu rejected, saying that she could help more patients by sticking to her post.

On Feb. 14, Liu's condition suddenly deteriorated and was transferred to Tongji Hospital in the same city. He died on Tuesday morning despite his colleagues' all-out efforts to save his life.

"He was really our role model who has demonstrated true leadership for us in this battle. He had a great sense of responsibility and had accomplished a lot in his position. He also had persistent pursuit in health undertakings. We must turn our grief into strength and spare no effort to win this battle," said Wang Lixia, secretary of Party committee of Wuhan Wuchang Hospital.

Later on the same day, a central government team guiding the coronavirus epidemic control work expressed deep condolences over the death of Liu to his family.

The World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also mourned the death of Liu Zhiming on Tuesday.

He said on Twitter that Liu "touched and saved numerous lives in the COVID-19 outbreak,", adding that "my thoughts are with them and all the front-line health workers fighting the virus."
