The team also estimate that the measures taken in China have avoided a significant number of cases, but the key message that should give all countries hope, courage and confidence is that the virus can be contained."

"For the moment, we are not witnessing the uncontained global spread of this virus, and we are not witnessing large scale severe disease or death. Does this virus have pandemic potential? Absolutely it has. Are we there yet? From our assessment, not yet. The sudden increase in new cases is certainly very concerning, I have spoken consistently for the need of facts, not fear. Using the word 'pandemic' now does not fit the facts, but it may certainly cause fear."

Storyline

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday said China's progress in containing the COVID-19 epidemic is encouraging for the rest of the world, and stressed that though the virus has the potential to become a global pandemic, it has not yet reached that level based upon WHO's assessments.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, made the remarks at a press briefing in Geneva, Switzerland where he stressed the importance of not spreading fear regarding the epidemic. He noted that China's measures and progress in containing the virus are encouraging signs which should give confidence to other nations, according to the findings of a WHO expert team in China.

"We are encouraged by the continued decline in cases in China. The team has made a range of findings about the transmissibility of the virus, the severity of the disease and impact of the measures taken. The team also estimate that the measures taken in China have avoided a significant number of cases, but the key message that should give all countries hope, courage and confidence is that the virus can be contained," he said.

Outside China, there have now been 2,074 cases of COVID-19 in 28 countries and 23 deaths recorded as of Monday, with Italy, Iran and South Korea witnessing a sudden rise in cases, prompting speculation about whether these increases mean that this epidemic has now become a pandemic.

However, the WHO chief said that based on an ongoing assessment of the geographical spread of the virus, the severity of the disease it causes and the impact it has on the entire global society, the COVID-19 should not be described as a "pandemic" at the current time .

Using the word 'pandemic' now does not fit the facts, but it may certainly cause fear," he said.

With regards to the growing concerns surrounding the epidemic situation in countries including Italy, Iran and South Korea, the WHO said it will provide all necessary support to help affected countries understand the virus as well as its transmission.
