"We predicted that the peak should come in the middle of February, close to the month end, and the confirmed cases really dropped after Feb 15. We predict the total number would be 60,000 to 70,000, which is closer to that of the foreign authoritative forecast. Now that the situation abroad has changed, we have to take another look. Although the epidemic emerged in China, the virus might not have originated from China. They predicted that the disease can be controlled as early as the end of May, but our forecast is that the epidemic can basically controlled by the end of April. The time has yet arrived, and we would like to make a comparison to find which one is closer, as our country has implemented forceful measures and awareness of group prevention and control."

Storyline

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in China will be brought under control by late April as the country continues to see a decline in the death toll from the epidemic, according a Chinese expert on Thursday.

Renowned Chinese respiratory expert Zhong Nanshan said that he is confident in the prevention and control measures that have been taken and stands by the predictions made by his team, speaking at a press conference in Guangzhou City of south China's Guangdong Province.

The time has yet arrived, and we would like to make a comparison to find which one is closer, as our country has implemented forceful measures and awareness of group prevention and control," said Zhong, head of the National Health Commission's high-level expert team and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Zhong also recommended foreign countries to learn from China's experience in the fight against the novel coronavirus epidemic and said he would share China's experience with the European Respiratory Society (ERS) this weekend via a livestream online.

China reported 433 new confirmed cases of the COVID-19, 29 new deaths and 508 additional suspected cases on Wednesday from 31 provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, according to the National Health Commission (NHC).

Wednesday also witnessed a total of 2,750 people cured and discharged from hospital, including a 93-year-old patient from Fuzhou City, east China's Fujian Province, and a 61-year-old patient, who was in critical condition for 13 days in Shiyan City of central China's Hubei, the hardest-hit province.

In order to provide closer monitoring of the patients' conditions and enable more extensive long-distance consultations, an audio-video Internet system was being tested on Wednesday at the Leishenshan Hospital in Wuhan City, capital of Hubei Province and the epicenter of the epidemic outbreak.

The system was already tested by medical experts from other hospitals across China including east China's Jiangxi Province, north China's Shanxi Province and southwest China's Sichuan Province, who have already conducted several long-distance consultations.

By the end of Wednesday, the system had been in trial operation in 17 inpatient wards in Leishenshan Hospital managed by a medical aid team from the northeastern province of Liaoning. The installation underway in the other 15 wards at the hospital is expected to completed on Thursday.

Once put into operation, the system will provide clearer views into all wards and quarantine zones at the hospital, and allow healthcare personnel to upload the patients' status and treatment plans onto the cloud server to be accessible by medical experts in other parts of the country.

Numerous batches of medical supplies and daily necessities such as vegetables continue to be transported to Hubei Province.

With medical expertise and medicines indispensable to treat patients, other psychological supports are also crucial for patients, especially children.

Therefore, at the request of a medical aid team from Liaoning Province, a total of 21 boxes of toys have been delivered to Hubei from Shenyang City, capital of Liaoning Province.

Messages of support and encouraging words continued to pour in from the international community as politicians and experts from across the world hailed China's efforts in containing the outbreak and expressed their confidence in China's economy.

"There should not be any panic. Nobody should create fear across the world. It is a menace before the entire humanity, not before the people of China alone. We need the international solidarity and support to fight this menace," said D. Raja, Secretary-General of the Communist Party of India.

"I appreciate efficient efforts of the Chinese government to implement measures that prevent the spread of the virus. In a highly interconnected world, caring for people in Wuhan and China is to care about the health of the world. I show my support here to all Chinese people," said Laura Rojas, President of the Mexican Chamber of Deputies.

"It is commendable that a country with a huge population like China has taken such rapid and effective measures. China has clear goals and clear actions. I believe that with the patriotism of people, unity and determination, China will be able to overcome the epidemic soon," said Ronnie Lins, director of China-Brazil Center for Research and Business.

Some officials and experts said China's economy is resilient and will recover soon.

"As an economic power, China has a very diversified market, economy and production capacity. Meanwhile, China has connections with markets all over the world. With the work resumption, China's economic development will also be reinforced again. I'm sure China's economy can recover satisfactorily," said Daniel Salas Perraza, Costa Rican health minister.

"So the speed of reaction of the authorities, not just at a senior level in Beijing, but the health care authorities and at operating levels in hospitals, in labs, it's just incredible. So that would be the second thing, it is the ability to coordinate on a scale that frankly is massive and is unheard of. Once this crisis is over, China will come out strengthened, its position in the global supply chain will be clear, its importance and financial investments will follow," said Xavier Rolet, chairman of the board of directors of Tadawul and also the former chief executive of the London Stock Exchange.

As positive signs continue to show in China’s fight against the outbreak, another batch of major projects have resumed their construction across the country with strict epidemic prevention and control measures being implemented to ensure employees' safety.
