Storyline

As the COVID-19 outbreak has put a lot of pressure on international carmakers which depend on car parts made in China, suppliers in east China's Shanghai Municipality are sending car parts by charter planes to ensure a smooth global supply chain.

A charter plane carrying over 400 car parts on Tuesday left Shanghai to Chicago, one of 16 fights booked by an U.S. carmaker.

"Over 600 containers in China were unable to be delivered on time for General Motors' global supply chain [due to the epidemic]. It is our first time to deliver some important and much needed car parts to its factories in North America, Brazil and Argentina on a large scale by 16 charter flights," said Wang Zemin, General manager, SAIC Anji Logistics Co., Ltd.

As companies resume production nationwide, manufacturers have started delivering goods gradually, and the demand for shipping is recovering.

"We have seen many car parts, a lot of medical equipment and electronic products coming into our warehouse, as production has been gradually resumed. Our logistics industry has faced a growing demand of exports in the last 2 weeks," said Li Wenjun, senior manager, Freight Depot of Eastern Air Logistics.

According to China Eastern Airlines, the cargo volume of imports has reached over 800 tons per day, increasing over 50 percent from the same period last year, while the volume of exports has reached over 900 tons a day, a 30 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

"We have been working at full power for two weeks. With the numbers if charter flights increasing from about 50 to over 60 last week, we expect to see a peak of shipping demand in March and April," said Zhang Ning, senior manager of Marketing Department of Eastern Air Logistics.

The company said its current shipping capacity is not enough and may consider buying more capacity for the upcoming demand.
