If we don't take actions, if we don't move, if we don't prepare, if we don't get ready, that may be a future we have to experience, we have to endure. So much of the future of this epidemic is not in the hands of virus. A lot of future of this epidemic is in the hands of ourselves."

Storyline

The World Health Organization (WHO) Friday raised the risk assessment of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) from "high" to "very high" at global level.

WHO is concerned over the continued increase in the number of cases and affected countries over the last few days.

"The continued increase in the number of cases and the number of affected countries over the last few days are clearly of concern. Our epidemiologists have been monitoring these developments continuously, and we have now increased our assessment of the risk of spread and the risk of impact of COVID-19 to very high at a global level," said WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at a daily briefing in Geneva.

Michael Ryan, executive director of the WHO Health Emergencies Program, said that raising the risk assessment at the global level "doesn't make a legal difference to the way in which states have to act," but essentially reflects what's happening at the global level.

"We're on the highest level of alert and highest level of risk assessment in terms of spread and in terms of impact, but that is not in order to alarm and scare people. I think this is a reality check for every government on the planet. Wake up!Get ready! This virus is maybe on the way, and you need to be ready," said Ryan.

WHO experts said that despite the global spread, China's experience proves there is still a chance to contain the spread of the new virus if countries take measures to detect cases early, isolate infected patients and trace contacts.

"We've see the evidence of China that the virus can be significantly curbed. If we don't take actions, if we don't move, if we don't prepare, if we don't get ready, that may be a future we have to experience, we have to endure. So much of the future of this epidemic is not in the hands of virus. A lot of future of this epidemic is in the hands of ourselves," said Ryan.

In addition, Tedros pointed out that the vaccines for the new virus are under development and all countries should work together to combat the epidemic.

"More than 20 vaccines are in development globally and several therapeutics are in clinical trials. We expect the first results in a few weeks. Our greatest enemy right now is not the virus itself, it’s fear, rumors and stigma. And our greatest assets are facts, reason and solidarity," he said.
