Storyline

A group of Chinese medical experts with medical supplies arrived in Serbia's capital city of Belgrade Saturday to help the country fight the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The Chinese medical aid came after Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on March 15 announced a state of emergency in the country to suppress the outbreak of coronavirus, and called for assistance from China.

There was a large round of applause as Chinese doctors exited the plane at the Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport. They were greeted by the Serbian president. The Chinese pilots pointed out Chinese and Serbian flags through the cockpit windows and waved them in response to the host's welcome.

"China's fight against the epidemic is not over yet but they said they must help their sworn friend of Serbia. The Serbian people will never forget this kindness. China is our old friend and we will pass on our friendship from generation to generation as they have showed us that 'A friend in need is a friend indeed.' We will reward them if they need help one day. We will show our love and respect and offer them support that no one else can," Vucic said in a brief speech at the airport.

The Chinese medical assistance team consists of six specialists who are adept in the infectious diseases control, pulmonary and critical care medicine, infections and mental health. They will assist Serbia in the fight against the the epidemic.

"China and Serbia are brothers who share weal and woe and keep iron-like friendship. When it comes to the joint fight against the epidemic, the two peoples will add new stories to this friendship. We also pass on the concept of building a community with a shared future for humanity with this joint fight," said Chinese Ambassador to Serbia Chen Bo.

The Chinese medical experts departed from the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport in south China's Guangdong Province at 13:20 Saturday. They are two public health experts, three clinical treatment professionals and one mental health specialist.

The team was established by the Guangdong provincial health commission tasked by China's National Health

"We have several pieces of good experience to share. The important one is to teach people how to protect themselves, so popular science should be promoted. Another is to provide good training for medical workers before they start clinical treatment. When they can protect themselves, they can well carry out their work," said Lin Bingliang, chief physician of the Department of Infectious Diseases with the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangdong.

"In fulfilling this mission, we will mainly share China's epidemic prevention and control experience. First, we will give a risk assessment to the whole region, including the scope of the spread, the number of infected patients and the number of critical cases. We have brought some protective gears including protective suits, goggles, gloves, masks and a sputum excretion instrument donated by a company. We will donate all to them," said Peng Zhiqiang, deputy head of the Institute for Communicable Diseases Control and Prevention with the Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Previously, China sent a first batch of medical aid to Serbia, including 1,000 rapid test kits.

According to Serbia's Health Ministry, with 22 new infections reported on Saturday, the national tally has risen to 135. It confirmed the first coronavirus-related death in the country on Friday.
