Storyline

There was no new locally transmitted case of the COVID-19 reported on the Chinese mainland on Tuesday, said Mi Feng, spokesman of the National Health Commission (NHC), at a regular press briefing in Beijing on Wednesday.

The Chinese mainland reported 47 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, all imported, Mi told the press.

"From 00:00 to 24:00 on March 24, all the provincial-level regions [on the mainland] and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps reported 47 new confirmed cases and 33 new suspected cases, all imported ones. There were four new deaths on Tuesday, and 491 more patients were discharged from hospital upon recovery, 1,215 close contacts were removed from medical observation and the number of severe cases decreased by 174," said Mi.

The overall confirmed cases on the mainland had reached 81,218 by the end of Tuesday, with 4,287 patients, including 1,399 severe cases, still being treated. A total of 73,650 patients had been discharged after recovery, and a total of 3,281 people died of the disease, Mi said.

A total of 134 people were still suspected of being infected with the novel coronavirus, and 13,356 close contacts were still under medical observation, Mi said.

"Hubei on March 24 reported no new confirmed case, no new suspected case, nor was there any suspected case in existence," he said.

Among the 487 newly discharged patients in Hubei on Tuesday, 472 were in Wuhan. Of the three new deaths the province reported Tuesday, two were in Wuhan. There were still 3,828 confirmed cases undergoing medical treatment in Hubei, with 3,794 in Wuhan. Of the 3,828 cases, 1,368 were severe ones, with 1,358 in Wuhan, Mi said.

A total of 60,810 patients had been discharged from hospital upon recovery in Hubei, with 43,686 in Wuhan. On Tuesday, the death toll in Hubei rose to 3,163, with 2,526 in Wuhan. A total of 67,801 confirmed cases had been reported in Hubei, with 50,006 in Wuhan, the spokesman said.

"From 00:00 to 24:00 on March 24, 47 newly imported cases were reported, with 19 of them in Shanghai, five in Beijing, five in Guangdong, four in Tianjin, four in Fujian, two in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, two in Jiangsu, two in Sichuan, and one each in Jilin, Zhejiang, Shandong and Shaanxi. By the end of March 24, a total of 474 imported cases had been reported," said Mi.

By the end of Tuesday, a total of 386 confirmed cases had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 26 ones in the Macao SAR, and 216 in Taiwan.

"On March 24, no new confirmed or suspected case of local transmission was reported on the Chinese mainland. Starting today, Hubei has lifted outbound transportation restrictions in areas except Wuhan, recovering the outbound traffic in an orderly manner," said the spokesman.

Wuhan, the Chinese city hardest hit by the novel coronavirus outbreak, will lift outbound travel restrictions from April 8 after over two months of lockdown, local authorities said Tuesday.
