Storyline

The UK is transforming a large conference center in east London into a temporary hospital capable of treating 4,000 COVID-19 patients, which is expected to be ready within a week, the Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced on Tuesday.

The exterior of the 100,000-square-meter ExCeL Centre remained quiet and empty with only loading trucks coming in and out on Wednesday, but the preparation work inside is in full swing.

The facility is to be named as the "Nightingale Hospital", after the famous Victorian Era nurse Florence Nightingale. It will be split into two wards, each being capable of treating 2,000 patients, with 500 beds equipped with ventilators and oxygenerators.

The British military is currently assisting in the reconstruction project and management of the hospital which is expected to admit its first patient by next week, according to the Ministry of Defence.

Located in east London's Docklands, the venue has previously been used to host large international conferences and exhibitions including many events during the 2012 London Olympics.

The UK government has been stepping up its emergency response measures as it braces for a dramatic increase in the number of coronavirus patients in the coming weeks.

As of Wednesday, a total of 9,529 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the UK, an increase of 1,452 over Tuesday, with 463 deaths being recorded, according to the UK's Department of Health and Social Care.
