Storyline


A plane carrying Chinese medical aid arrived at the International Airport of Algiers on Friday, as part of the Chinese efforts to help combat the spread of the novel coronavirus in Algeria.

The donation, worth 3,237,000 yuan (about 450,000 U.S. dollars) of medical supplies, includes 500,000 medical surgical masks, 50,000 N95 masks and 2,000 units of medical protective clothing and medical face masks as well as respirators for intensive care.

Several senior Algerian officials, Chinese Ambassador to Algeria Li Lianhe and other Chinese representatives were present at the airport for the donation ceremony.

Lotfi Benbahmed, president of National Council of the Order of Algerian Pharmacists, thanked China for their support and hailed the deep and strong relations between Algeria and China.

"This donation from the People's Republic of China is another proof of the depth and strength of relations and bonds of friendship and brotherhood between the Chinese and Algerian peoples, which have been expressed on several occasions by the President of Algeria and the President of the People's Republic of China. We are very proud of this friendship and we will always work to further develop it in various fields to serve people of both countries," said Benbahmed.

Chinese companies and businessmen in Algeria are also collecting medical supplies to donate to the country for its fight against the epidemic.

On Friday, the Algerian health authorities announced 409 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 26 deaths in the North African country.
