"There is a definition of the novel coronavirus infection without symptoms. It refers to people who show no clinical symptoms but are positive in nucleic acid testing, particularly in respiratory tract specimen, or their IGM anti-body turns positive. They are called infected people with no symptoms."

In addition, we need to cut the ways of transmission with very easy methods, such as frequent ventilation in rooms, and wearing face masks in crowded places or confined space if we have to go out. This is necessary. Thirdly, we must wash hands carefully."

Storyline

Novel coronavirus (COVID-19) patients without symptoms have been treated the same as confirmed or suspected cases in China, says an expert on Sunday, who also revealed that infected patients without symptoms are low in transmission.

Several COVID-19 infection cases with no symptoms have occurred in China over the past few days though the number of domestically transmitted cases is very small now.

"There is a definition of the novel coronavirus infection without symptoms. It refers to people who show no clinical symptoms but are positive in nucleic acid testing, particularly in respiratory tract specimen, or their IGM anti-body turns positive. They are called infected people with no symptoms," said Jiang Rongmeng, member of an expert team organized by the National Health Commission for controlling the COVID-19, and a chief physician at Beijing Ditan Hospital.

This kind of people are usually discovered as close contacts of confirmed cases. There are two circumstances. One is that they are in the incubation period, but tested positive for the virus. They might be infectious. The other is that they had very mild symptoms but are positive for nucleic acid testing or antibody in the final recovery stage. They are unlikely to be infectious, because they have already had antibody, Jiang said.

China has always applied tight measures in treating the infection cases with no symptoms.

"Our country included the infections with no symptoms into the [COVID-19] prevention and control guideline on Jan 28. They have been required to be treated the same as confirmed or suspected cases. That is, if infected patients with no symptoms are discovered, they should be reported in two hours, quarantined, and receive epidemiological investigation. Also people who have contacts with them are also included in medical observation," said Jiang.

Infected people with no symptoms can only transmit the novel coronavirus in close contacts but prevention and control can not be relaxed, Jiang said.

"Firstly, it is necessary to keep a safe distance from people around, like at least one to two meters. In addition, we need to cut the ways of transmission with very easy methods, such as frequent ventilation in rooms, and wearing face masks in crowded places or confined space if we have to go out. This is necessary. Thirdly, we must wash hands carefully," said Jiang.
