Chinese President Xi Jinping said major cities can become "smarter" by using big data, cloud computing and artificial intelligence technologies to modernize city governance.

Xi, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks while visiting the City Brain, a smart city platform aiming to improve city management, in Hangzhou of east China's Zhejiang Province on Tuesday.

Hangzhou's City Brain project was launched in 2016 to help the city make plans in areas including public security, transportation and health care with the use of big data, cloud computing and artificial intelligence, among other cutting-edge technologies.

During his inspection, Xi visited a display of digital applications for city governance, disease control and traffic management. Xi approved of Hangzhou's innovative achievements in using the City Brain to improve the efficiency of traffic, culture, tourism and health care systems.

Xi pointed out that the modernization of the national governance system and capacity relies on the modernization of the city governance system and capacity.

Using big data, cloud computing, block chains, artificial intelligence and other cutting-edge technologies to improve city management, model and concept is the only way to go from digitalization to intelligence to smartness. Making cities smarter and more intelligent is the only way to modernize the city governance system and capacity, and it holds a promising future.

During the inspection, Xi expressed his hope that Hangzhou could keep pressing forward the construction of the City Brain, tapping into the potential of city development and speeding up the construction of a smart city to provide more experience that can be popularized nationwide.
