Chinese President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, inspected the rural development in Anji County on Monday and the wetland conservation in Hangzhou City on Tuesday in east China's Zhejiang Province.
While visiting Yucun Village, Xi talked with villagers and learned about the huge changes as a result of advancing green development.
In 2005, it was in this mountainous village that Xi, then Party chief of Zhejiang, put forward the concept that "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets".
Over the past 15 years, the village has firmly implemented that concept, and embarked on a path of sustainable development featuring ecological beauty, industrial prosperity and people's prosperity. The construction of beautiful countryside has become a reality in the village.
Today, the village has 280 households and its residents earned a per capita income of 49,598 yuan (about 6,986 U.S. dollars) in 2019.
At the village's residents service center, Xi had a detailed understanding of the development of the village and praised the villagers' efforts in developing a green economy and boost their incomes.
Walking along the village road, Xi inspected the village appearance and the growth of crops. He also went to the edge of the field and talked with villagers, asking about their preparation for spring plowing.
"The farm workers are still some of old masters. What about your usual income from joining a cooperative?" Xi asked the villagers. The latter told him that they can earn 150 yuan (abut 21.15 U.S. dollars) a day.
Chunlin mountain villa is the first homestay opened after the village closed mines and took the road of green development. The owner of the villa warmly welcomed Xi and introduced his farmhouse management and the sales of white tea and other featured agricultural products in recent years.
"Tourists who come here would prefer farm dishes and local specialties," said Xi.
Leaving the village, Xi went to Anji's mediation center to learn about how primary-level social disputes are resolved.
Xi stressed that grassroots level is the foundation of social harmony and stability. It is necessary to improve the mechanism for preventing, mediating, handling and resolving multiple social conflicts and disputes, combine visits by Party members and officials with petitions by the masses, and standardize the mediation, handling and resolution of conflicts and disputes among the masses.
During his inspection at the Xixi National Wetland Park in Hangzhou City, China's first national wetland park with a total area of 11.5 square kilometers, Xi observed the conservation and utilization of wetlands.
Along the way, tourists greeted Xi and he also waved to them from time to time.
During the tour, Xi visited stalls cooking Longjing tea and selling local cultural and creative products, and encouraged them to pass on intangible cultural heritage such as traditional handicrafts.
Xi pointed out that the original ecology of wetlands is what tourism can capitalize on, and the development of tourism should not sacrifice the ecological environment. There should be no excessive commercial development, no buildings affecting the ecological environment, still less private clubs, so that the park can become a green space shared by the people.
Xi stressed that water is the soul of wetlands and the beauty of natural ecology is the most intrinsic and important beauty of the Xixi wetland. We must unswervingly give top priority to protection and do our best to maintain the wetland ecology and water environment, Xi said, adding that the protection of the West Lake and the Xixi wetland should be a clear direction for Hangzhou's urban development and governance. Xi stressed that more experience should be created in building a livable city where people and nature live in harmony and thrive together.
