At this stage, already we have the majority of our workforce back at work working stably."

Storyline

Multinational enterprises had a panel discussion on fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and resuming production in Beijing's economic and technological development area in Yizhuang on Friday.

Entrepreneurs of 10 multinational corporations, including Mercedes Benz and Varian, shared their experience in how to cope with the shortage of raw materials supplies to resume production.

To help these foreign companies find suppliers and resume production, the administrative committee of the Yizhuang development area has contacted over 50 auto parts enterprises in nearby Tianjin and Hebei Province through the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei cooperation mechanism.

With the help from suppliers, the Beijing Benz Automotive Company resumed operation on Feb 10, with almost 100 percent of its 13,000 employees coming back to work.

"(If) we create a framework, how do we collaborate, how do we share information? They all have to again just look at the cooperation with government. There are so many stakeholders in this process, many suppliers, shareholders, many entities that have to be consulted to get a quick-decision process going. At this stage, already we have the majority of our workforce back at work working stably," said Arno van der Merwe, President and CEO of Beijing Benz Automotive.

Varian managed to continuously manufacture cancer radiotherapy equipment, with the help of the government, during the pandemic, assuming the role as global supplier after its factories in the United States were shutdown.

"We also opened this new product line. So this actually marks our Beijing plant. We hope, with this new product line, we will be able to treat more cancer patients globally," said Cao Shan, vice-president of Varian China.

Founded in 1992, the Yizhuang development area is now home to more than 800 foreign enterprises from over 40 countries and regions, and the four main industries in the area are information technology, automotive, healthcare and equipment manufacturing.

"For the over 300 companies each with an output value surpassing a billion yuan, we've arranged special housekeepers serving them, helping them with business dispatching one on one. All the enterprises above designated size in our development zone have resumed operation, with 100 percent of their employees returning to work," said Chen Xiaonan, deputy director of the development area.
