Storyline

As protests against stay-at-home orders are breaking out across the United States, demonstrators in Richmond, Virginia staged a "rolling rally," driving their cars around the city center on Wednesday.

Gatherings of more than 10 people are currently banned in Virginia. So the protesters drove their cars around the state capitol building instead. The organizers called the rally "Reopen Virginia," and they are demanding an end to the state's stay-at-home order, which has been in place since March.

"The new models show, if people don't go back to work, death is imminent. You can't eat, you can't live. If we can't reopen this economy, then there's no life," said a protester.

"I just feel there's not a sufficient reason to force everyone to take away anyone's constitutional rights, even if it were as dangerous as they're saying it is," said a protester.

"We want people to be safe but we need to quarantine people who are at risk, not healthy people," said another protester.

Governor of Virginia, Ralph Northam, who is a Democrat, called protests like these "selfish." By not practicing social distancing, Northam said, they could be putting healthcare workers at risk.

Supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump were also out in force at this rally. There were lots of cars with "Trump 2020" and "Make America Great Again" signs. And the president has acknowledged protests like this one on Twitter.

Last week, the president tweeted "Liberate Virginia" in capital letters, along with two other Democrat-governed states, where people protested social distancing orders.

According to the Virginia Department of Health, 10,266 cases of COVID-19 have been identified in Virginia as of 17:00 local time on Wednesday, although the number of daily new infections has been falling in recent days. The state governor, though, insisted it is still too early to reopen.

The number of COVID-19 cases in the U.S. topped 840,000 Wednesday evening with more than 46,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.

The U.S. Senate on Tuesday passed a 484-billion-dollar relief package that would increase funding for small businesses, hospitals and COVID-19 testing as the virus fallout continues to ripple through the country.
