"China plans to launch its first Mars probe in this year, so we are really tight in terms of time. We aim to complete orbiting, landing and roving in one mission. Mars is far away from the Earth, and there is large time delay in the space teleoperation. Plus, the environment of planetary space is very complex, and we are not familiar with the landform on the surface of Mars. We have only one launch window in every two years. This is a brand new challenge for us."

"This will be the first time that China conducts Mars exploration mission. We know nothing about its environment, especially the parameter of its atmosphere and such. It means we will arrive at an environment we have no knowledge of and carry out an exploration. It's not hard to imagine the difficulty of it."

Storyline

China's first Mars exploration mission has been named Tianwen-1, announced by the China National Space Administration on Friday(CNSA).

The name and logo of China's first Mars exploration mission are made public on the Space Day of China, which falls on April 24, according to the CNSA.

"The name 'Tianwen' is derived from the long poetry written by the great Chinese poet Qu Yuan. It expressed Chinese nation's tenacity and persistence in pursuing the truth. It symbolizes the long journey to scientific truth and scientific innovation has no end. The logo 'Lanxingjiutian' shows China aerospace's vision and attitude of openness and cooperation," said Ge Xiaochun, chief engineer of CNSA.

China's Mars probe, if achieved, will be the first of its kind in the world to complete three missions at the same time.

This is a brand new challenge for us," said Ge.

Since the relative positions of the Earth and the Mars are changing constantly, there will be only one launch window in every 26 months for the probe to reach the Mars. Missing this year's launch window means two more years of wait time for the next chance.

Not only the time schedule is tight for the Mars mission, many unknown challenges will be awaiting ahead, scientists say.

"This will be the first time that China conducts Mars exploration mission. We know nothing about its environment, especially the parameter of its atmosphere and such. It means we will arrive at an environment we have no knowledge of and carry out an exploration. It's not hard to imagine the difficulty of it," said Wang Chuang, chief designer of the Mars probe.
