The last 20 members of the medical expert team organized by the National Health Commission (NHC) started to leave Wuhan, the city hit hardest by the COVID-19 epidemic in China, on Sunday.
The expert team from east China's Jiangsu Province, including seven doctors and two nurses from Department of Critical Care Medicine, Department of Respiratory Medicine and Emergency Department, was working together with 11 experts from Beijing during the height of the epidemic to treat severe and critically-ill patients.
They received Doupi, a well-known Wuhan snack made from sticky rice, mushrooms and beans, from medics of Wuhan First Hospital before their departure.
"They are very considerate and took good care of us," said one of the experts.
The experts were still concerned about the patients they treated in the city.
"We will follow the conditions of the key patients. We will be very glad to hear that the patients you treated finally get recovered. That will be the best present," said Zhang Ping, another expert.
Passengers took photos of the experts who braved danger and rushed to the epicenter of the epidemic to save life.
"At the most dangerous moment of the epidemic, they fought on the frontline and protected Wuhan. They made huge contributions to Wuhan. They are the bravest fighters. I'm truly grateful," said Ms. Meng, a Wuhan resident.
Local railway department made special tickets for the experts, with the train they took named "Triumph", destination called "Beautiful Hometown", and departure time as "Victory Day".
"I'm very excited. It is not just a return ticket, but also made us look back at our experience here over the past months. We got through all the hardships and our return now means we've won a phased victory," said Liu Hui, one of the team members.
"We came to Wuhan and saw many heroes fighting against the epidemic. It is our honor and pride to join them and fight for Wuhan together," said Zuo Xiangrong, another team member.
Wuhan cleared all COVID-19 cases in hospital on Sunday, which marked a milestone for the city.
The outcome was earned through the hard work of medical workers in Wuhan and those sent from across the country to the city, NHC spokesman Mi Feng said at a press conference on Sunday.
