You will start to not just worry about their state of illness, but also think about something more. For example, what will he or she do in the future? What will happen to his family? Leaving the city does not necessarily mean the end of all our medical tasks."

Storyline

Three top medical experts who took care of critically ill COVID-19 patients in central China's Wuhan left the city for home on Sunday, after spending more than 100 days in the hardest-hit Chinese region fighting the highly contagious epidemic.

As the COVID-19 epidemic has largely waned in China, the existing number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Wuhan has dropped to zero.

Du Bin, who arrived in Wuhan on January 18, took turns every day inspecting all the designated hospitals for the centralized treatment of critically ill COVID-19 patients. He inspected the TongJi Hospital affiliated with Huazhong University of Science and Technology before leaving Wuhan. There are currently 10 patients who recovered from COVID-19 still undergoing treatment for complications in the hospital, including three medical workers. For Du, they are both patients and colleagues.

"In fact, when you contact these patients every day, I think there will be some changes to the relationship between doctors and patients. You will start to not just worry about their state of illness, but also think about something more. For example, what will he or she do in the future? What will happen to his family? Leaving the city does not necessarily mean the end of all our medical tasks," said Du.

As a member of the expert team under the Central Government Steering Group dispatched to Wuhan, Qiu Haibo put forward important strategic proposals such as nationwide assistance to Wuhan, and the construction of square cabin hospitals, all of which have meant great contributions to the fight against the epidemic. At the time of departure for home, he also made a promise to return to Wuhan in the future to meet with his comrades.

"We were all busy with our work during this period of time. In fact, I really hope to come to Wuhan again next time, and have a happy meeting with the colleagues in Wuhan, as everyone was working and treating patients every day. I think that Wuhan made great sacrifice this time, in exchange for the overall control of the epidemic today, it is indeed very difficult," said Qiu.

Tong Zhaohui, also one of the first batch of experts who arrived in Wuhan, comes from Hubei's Huanggang City. He fought in Wuhan for more than three months without returning home, and now he will take the fight to northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, where there are still new cases.

"I feel that we are reluctant to leave them in the end. No matter whether it comes to colleagues working together, medical staff in various hospitals, or these common people in Wuhan, I think we should still thank them all. We have accumulated some mature experience. I think we should bring it to Harbin and share it with everyone. Then the patients there will be treated according to a more reasonable and scientific principle," said Tong.
