Storyline

China's first commercial 2.0 version of maglev train ran 160 kilometers per hour on the Changsha Maglev Express in central China on Tuesday morning, successfully completing a speed test at its maximum design speed.

The test work, which lasts ten months, was jointly conducted by many enterprises including the CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Corporation Limited and research institutes including National University of Defense Technology.

In the process of speed test, major technical problems including medium speed suspension stability and vehicle-bridge coupling were solved. The difficulties including high risk of test, no reference of successful cases and short operation time of night skylight were overcome. Finally, the train successfully completed the speed test of 160 kilometers per hour.

"The 160 kilometers per hour marks the highest speed of the current medium-low speed maglev train and also the highest speed of its kind in China and the world. And before this, we have operated the maglev train of the highest speed of 100 kilometers per hour," said Peng Qibiao, chief expert of CRRC Corporation Limited.

Compared with version 1.0, the 2.0 version of the maglev train has increased its suspension capacity of by six tons, traction power by 30 percent and speed by 60 percent. The 1.0 version of maglev train with speed of 100 kilometers per hour is suitable for urban areas. The 2.0 version of maglev train with speed of 160 kilometers per hour is suitable for the transportation from downtown to satellite city.

Currently, the CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Corporation Limited is taking the lead to conduct research on the 3.0 version of maglev train with speed of 200 kilometers per hour, which is suitable for inter-city traffic.
