The United States' navy hospital ship Comfort left New York City on Thursday after completing its mission to help relieve the city's hospital system overwhelmed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Although a see-off was held for the crew members, the ship's month-long mission was not without controversy.
The Comfort, one of two hospital ships with the U.S. Navy, is staffed with some 1,200 crew members, with 1,000 beds, 12 fully-equipped operating rooms, eight intensive care unit beds, and four radiology suites.
It arrived in the hardest-hit New York City on March 30 to take on non-COVID-19 patients so as to free up beds in local hospitals which can be focused on fighting the pandemic.
However, U.S. media reported on April 2 that only 20 patients had been accepted by the ship within three days since its arrival, as many local hospitals struggled to find beds for patients infected with the virus.
Military protocols and bureaucratic hurdles prevented the Comfort from accepting more patients, according to reports.
On April 4, media reported that several patients infected with COVID-19 were mistakenly brought to the ship, raising doubts about the operation procedures of the ship.
The ship started taking in COVID-19 patients with 500 beds allocated to them on April 6.
However, at least three crew members aboard the Navy hospital ship tested positive for the novel coronavirus beginning on April 8.
According to media reports, they might have been infected before they left the base in Virginia.
By Thursday, the Comfort had taken a total of 182 patients. As of April 17, only 71 of the 500 beds for COVID-19 were occupied.
Another field hospital assembled by the U.S. Army in the Jacob K. Javits Center in Manhattan will close in May.
The hospital, with over 2,500 beds, has received 1,093 patients.
