"It seems like they've grown up all of a sudden. Many of them volunteered, of their own accord, to go to the front line. For example, a couple from our Second Hospital Affiliated to Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine vied with each other to go. There is no need for both of them to go. We agreed one of them to go but the other submitted a written request asking to go. In the end, two of them went there. I feel they were motivated by a sense of responsibility, a sense of mission."

Storyline

The young generation is trustworthy and brave enough to take responsibilities, said Zhang Boli, an academician with the Chinese Academy of Engineering while talking about his experience of working with young colleagues to fight the COVID-19 epidemic in Wuhan, the Chinese city once hardest hit by the coronavirus outbreak, ahead of the Youth Day which falls on May 4.

The 72-year-old academician, also president of Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, went to Wuhan on Jan. 27 and treated patients by combining traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) therapy and western treatment methods. Working alongside him were mostly young people born in the 80s and 90s.

I feel they were motivated by a sense of responsibility, a sense of mission," said Zhang.

At the beginning of the epidemic, many young medical workers wrote applications and volunteered to join the battle. Thousands of medical workers went to Hubei Province to help combat the coronavirus disease COVID-19.

"When disaster struck, help came from all sides. This is our duty as medical workers," said a medical worker from the Tianjin medical team to Hubei.

"I can finally do my share for the country after so many years. It is the time that my country needs us most. It is our honor to go to the front line," said another medical worker from the team.

"[They said] 'I want to go. I'm young. For the country and people, we're duty bound to go.' I think it reflects the spirit of utter devotion and responsibility of this generation. That's why I say this young generation is trustworthy. They will definitely be doing a good job and even better than us. I'm definitely sure about that, " said Zhang.

Zhang said the performance and spirit have embodied the spirit of the May Fourth Movement and are inspiring more people in the fight against the epidemic.

"The the spirit of the May Fourth Movement has been gradually embedded into the words and deeds of this generation. It will find its expression in times of need. We've gained a lot in the fight against the epidemic, and one of them is a generation of people have emerged from this battle, which has left a dent in them for a lifetime, " said Zhang.
