Storyline

In assisting Iraq to battle against the COVID-19, the voluntary expert team of the Red Cross Society of China to Iraq visited nine Iraqi governorates, held 27 training sessions for over 1,000 Iraqi medical staff and built a nucleic acid testing laboratory and a CT laboratory for Iraq.

The voluntary expert team of Red Cross Society of China to Iraq consists of seven members, covering such professional fields as disease control, critical care, nucleic acid testing and medical imaging.

From March 7 to April 26, the Chinese expert team worked in Iraq for a total of 50 days. Building the CT laboratory at a tumor hospital on the outskirts of Baghdad was their last task before they returned to China. The lab was put into use before May 1.

The experts brought "sky eye" cameras to Iraq, which was a new technology applied in China to treat COVID-19 patients. This technology can identify face and body position information during CT examination, realizing smart orientation and positioning and accurately locating pneumonia lesions.

The operator can complete the inspection in an operating room nearby without entering the scanning room, which greatly reduces the risk of cross-infection among doctors and patients.

"CT has played a crucial role in the fight against COVID-19, from screening, making diagnosis, identifying diagnosis to disease assessment," said Chen Huai, a member of the team.

The experts faced many unexpected difficulties in a strange land. Chinese and Iraqi personnel worked together to install the CT lab by making do with what is locally available.

On April 25, after more than 10 hours of efforts, all the installation and debugging work of CT lab was finally completed. So far, they have been the longest serving team overseas during the COVID-19 outbreak.

"Iraqi Prime Minister Adil (Adel) Abdul-Mahdi spoke highly of China's efforts and contributions on many occasions during cabinet meetings," said Zhang Tao, Chinese ambassador to Iraq.

"Chinese experts, they helped a lot. The Chinese assistance helped a lot and was actually in time," said Yaseen Ahmed Abbass, president of Iraqi Red Crescent Society.
