"The source of the virus is a complex scientific problem. The answer should be found by scientists and experts through rigorous and meticulous scientific research, rather than being judged by politicians. We firmly oppose the politicization and stigmatization of the virus' origin. Once again, we call on everyone to respect science and stay away from conspiracy theories."

5. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Hua Chunying, spokeswoman, Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
"These reports once again show that virus tracing work is very complicated. Where did the original case occur? When can a case be seen as the first case? Currently, scientists and disease control experts have not reached a definitive conclusion. Relevant work continues and must be referred to scientists and professionals to study. The judgment of determining the traceability and transmission path should be made on the basis of science and facts, so that humans can better respond to such major infectious diseases."

Storyline

The origin of the novel coronavirus is a complex scientific problem, which should be explored by scientists and experts through rigorous and detailed scientific research, rather than judged by politicians, said Hua Chunying, the spokeswoman of the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Wednesday.

On April 30, the U.S. Office of Director of National Intelligence issued a statement saying that the U.S. intelligence community agreed with the scientific consensus that the novel coronavirus is not artificial, nor has it been genetically edited.

On May 4, CNN reported that two Western officials said that the shared intelligence of the "Five Eyes Alliance" showed that the novel coronavirus was "very unlikely" to originate in a laboratory accident.

On the same day, the U.S. National Geographic magazine published an interview with Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Fauci noted that current scientific evidence is very strongly leaning toward it not being artificially or deliberately manipulated.

In response to various news reports on the origin of the coronavirus released by U.S. media, Hua stressed that the source of the virus should be studied by scientists, not politicians.

"The source of the virus is a complex scientific problem. The answer should be found by scientists and experts through rigorous and meticulous scientific research, rather than being judged by politicians. We firmly oppose the politicization and stigmatization of the virus' origin. Once again, we call on everyone to respect science and stay away from conspiracy theories," she said.

Michael Melham, the mayor of Belleville, New Jersey said on April 30 that his COVID-19 antibody test was positive, believing that he was infected with the novel coronavirus in November last year. On May 3, Professor Yves Cohen, head of resuscitation of several hospitals in the Paris region, on BFMTV, found a patient who was already positive for COVID-19 on December 27, 2019. This news advanced the discovery time of confirmed COVID-19 cases in France by nearly two months.

Christian Lindmeier, a spokesman for the World Health Organization, said on Tuesday that the case that occurred in France last December was not linked to China, and this discovery provided a new picture. He urged countries to investigate unknown cases of pneumonia at the end of 2019.

All these facts indicate that the research on the virus' origin is a complex work that is better to be solved by scientists, according to Hua.

"These reports once again show that virus tracing work is very complicated. Where did the original case occur? When can a case be seen as the first case? Currently, scientists and disease control experts have not reached a definitive conclusion. Relevant work continues and must be referred to scientists and professionals to study. The judgment of determining the traceability and transmission path should be made on the basis of science and facts, so that humans can better respond to such major infectious diseases," She said.
