An average of 80,000 new COVID-19 cases have been reported daily since the beginning of April to the World Health Organization, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a press briefing Wednesday.
He added that the pandemic has severely disrupted basic health services around the world.
"Since the beginning of April, an average of around 80,000 new cases have been reported to WHO every day. Although the number of cases reported from western Europe is declining, more cases have been reported every day from eastern Europe, Africa, Southeast Asia, the eastern Mediterranean and Americas," said Tedros.
Tedros said strong and resilient health systems are the best defense against pandemics and the multiple health threats of the world.
The WHO has laid the groundwork for resilient health systems globally, Tedros said, calling on all countries to focus more on the vulnerable groups in society.
He said the world currently spends around 7.5 trillion U.S. dollars on health systems annually, accounting for nearly 10 percent of the global GDP.
But he said the best investment is to promote people's health and prevent diseases at the primary healthcare level, which can save both lives and funds.
