"Recently, we have been seeing reports that many cases actually occurred earlier. For example, in France, the time of the first case has now been traced back to last December, and it is said to have been caused by an unknown local virus which is different from the one that broke out in China. The chief epidemiologist of the Public Health Agency of Sweden said the first case in the country could have appeared as early as last October. We know a New Jersey mayor confirmed he contracted the virus last November. And I read a report this morning, saying there were already infected patients in Florida in January, and none of the 170 patients had traveled to China before their infection. But the relevant dates and figures were quickly deleted. When scientists are busy doing their job, Pompeo has been clutching at every opportunity to spread the words that the virus came from a lab in Wuhan. Where is the evidence? Show it! Or is he still in the process of manufacturing some?"

Storyline

U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo was self-contradictory on whether novel coronavirus was man-made or not, said a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman in Beijing on Thursday.

Hua Chunying made the comments on the interview of American Broadcasting Company with Pompeo on May 3 during which he said there is "a significant amount of evidence" that novel coronavirus emerged from a Chinese laboratory, but also said he agrees with U.S. intelligence agencies who said it is not man-made or genetically modified.

"He was incoherent because he had been making up lies to cover up one another. It is an open secret," said Hua at a press briefing.

Regarding Pompeo's negative comments on China's anti-epidemic efforts recently, Hua said facts speak for themselves.

"About the origins and about the Wuhan lab, we've been reiterating that any judgment on that matter must be based on scientific proofs and facts, just as what top medical and disease control experts around the world have said, including those from the United States," said Hua.
