At present, the epidemic has not yet come to an end, while the tasks we face in promoting development are immense. China's national legislature started its annual session Friday morning in Beijing.
President Xi Jinping and other Chinese leaders attended the opening meeting of the third session of the 13th National People's Congress, held at the Great Hall of the People.
Attendees of the meeting paid a silent tribute to martyrs who died fighting COVID-19 and compatriots who lost their lives in the epidemic.
After the silent tribute, Premier Li Keqiang delivered a government work report on behalf of the State Council to the legislature for deliberation.
China's annual legislative session – part of the Two Sessions (alongside the annual session of the country's top political advisory body) – usually takes place in March and lasts over ten days. The third session this year has been postponed for over two months due to the novel coronavirus outbreak. The duration of the session will be shortened to one week.
During the week-long session, the deputies will also review the report on the implementation of the 2019 plan and on the 2020 draft plan for national economic and social development, review the report on the execution of the central and local budgets for 2019 and on the draft central and local budgets for 2020, deliberate the bill of the draft civil code submitted by the NPC Standing Committee, deliberate the bill put forward by the NPC Standing Committee on reviewing a draft decision of the NPC on establishing and improving the legal system and enforcement mechanisms for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to safeguard national security, deliberate the work report of the NPC Standing Committee, the work report of the Supreme People's Court, and the work report of the Supreme People's Procuratorate, among others.
