"The report, just as the National Security Strategy released by the U.S. in 2017, has deliberately distorted China's political system and strategic intentions, vociferously played up the so-called 'China threat', and used it as an excuse to advocate continuing the hard-line policy of exerting all-round pressure on China."

5. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Zhao Lijian, spokesman, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (partially overlaid with shot 6):
"Lots of facts prove that the policy and practice pursued by the U.S. by adhering to the Cold War mentality and ideological prejudice have made a fundamental mistake from the beginning, which is doomed to failure. The history of more than 40 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the U.S. has fully demonstrated that cooperation benefits both sides while confrontation can only hurt them. Cooperation is the only correct choice for both countries. Neither side can change or replace the other."

"China will firmly defend its national sovereignty, security and development interests. We welcome dialog and cooperation and will resolutely fight back against containment and suppression. A stable and continuously growing Sino-U.S. relationship is in the fundamental interests of the people of the two countries and is also generally expected by the international community."

Storyline

China welcomes dialog and cooperation and will resolutely fight back against containment and suppression, said a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman at a press conference Friday.

Recently the Trump administration delivered a report, "U.S. Strategic Approach to the People's Republic of China," to members of Congress.

While commenting on the report, Zhao Lijian, the spokesman, said, "the report, just as the National Security Strategy released by the U.S. in 2017, has deliberately distorted China's political system and strategic intentions, vociferously played up the so-called 'China threat', and used it as an excuse to advocate continuing the hard-line policy of exerting all-round pressure on China."

In response to a series of erroneous words and actions by the U.S. over the past two years that have interfered in China's internal affairs and harmed China's interests, the Chinese government has repeatedly stated its solemn position and made a firm and strong response, noted Zhao.

Zhao said, "lots of facts prove that the policy and practice pursued by the U.S. by adhering to the Cold War mentality and ideological prejudice have made a fundamental mistake from the beginning, which is doomed to failure. The history of more than 40 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the U.S. has fully demonstrated that cooperation benefits both sides while confrontation can only hurt them. Cooperation is the only correct choice for both countries. Neither side can change or replace the other."

As two big countries with different national conditions, mutual respect, treating each other equally, and seeking common ground while reserving differences are the way to get along, said Zhao.

Zhao said, "China will firmly defend its national sovereignty, security and development interests. We welcome dialog and cooperation and will resolutely fight back against containment and suppression. A stable and continuously growing Sino-U.S. relationship is in the fundamental interests of the people of the two countries and is also generally expected by the international community."
