Brazil on Friday set new record in daily COVID-19 infections, while more European countries eased their lockdowns with an overall downward trend in new COVID-19 occurrences.

There had been 5,819,962 confirmed cases of COVID-19 globally, with 362,786 deaths, as of 18:30 CEST, Saturday, according to the latest data released by the World Health Organization (WHO).

In the United States, the COVID-19 cases reached 1,769,776 as of late Saturday, according to a tally kept by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University, with a nationwide death toll of 103,768.

The U.S. continues to be the country with the most confirmed cases and deaths caused by COVID-19 in the world.

Brazil has the fourth highest death toll from COVID-19 behind the United States, the United Kingdom and Italy in the world, after registering 956 deaths in 24 hours and raising the total to 28,834, the government said on Saturday.

In the last 24 hours, Brazil reported 33,274 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, the highest single-day surge so far, bringing the nationwide total to 498,440, the second highest in the world.

Spain reported four new COVID-19 deaths in the 24-hour period up to midnight Friday, raising the country's death toll to 27,125, said the Ministry of Health, Consumer Affairs and Social Services on Saturday.

The country also reported a sharp rise of 271 new cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the nationwide total to 239,228, compared with a rise of 187 cases in the previous 24-hour period.

Italy has geared up for the end of domestic travel restrictions next week as COVID-19 hospitalizations remained a positive trend for the hard-hit Mediterranean nation.

Italians expected to take holiday trips, visit distant friends and family, or relocate to their summer homes, beginning on June 3.

Under terms of a national lockdown that went into effect on March 10 and subsequent decrees that progressively relaxed the restrictions, Italians are forbidden from traveling across the borders of the country's 20 regions until June 2.

France on Saturday recorded 57 new COVID-19 deaths, taking the tally to 28,771, while fewer hospitalized patients were registered for the seventh week in a row.

As of Friday, about 307,000 people were under medical observation, Russia's consumer rights and human well-being watchdog Rospotrebnadzor said in a statement Saturday.

India will enter the fifth phase of lockdown with effect from June 1 till June 30, to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, said new guidelines issued by the Internal Security Ministry on Saturday.

Beginning March 25, the country has so far witnessed four phases of lockdown. The fourth phase is slated to end on Sunday.

The Lockdown 5.0 will, however, be with more relaxations, like reopening of shopping malls, saloons, hotels and restaurants, and religious places, though with restrictions like social distancing.

International flights will, however, remain shut till June 30.

The night curfew has been shortened by four hours. Now it will be in force from 21:00 till 05:00, instead of 19:00 till 07:00 observed during the past two weeks.
