Storyline

Violent protests are continuing to spread to cities across the United States for the fifth straight day after George Floyd, an unarmed African American, pleaded "I can't breathe" before dying in police custody in Minneapolis, the biggest city in the Midwest state of Minnesota.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on Saturday activated "full mobilization" of the Minnesota National Guard after four straight nights of violent protests in the city.

The move represents the largest domestic deployment in the Minnesota National Guard's 164-year history, local media reported.

More than 1,000 additional Citizen-Soldiers and Airmen will be activated on Saturday, according to a tweet from the state's National Guard.

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Minneapolis Friday night, defying a citywide 20:00 curfew that had been announced earlier that day. Businesses were burned and vandalized, as the rioting continued.

This is in addition to the 700 that were on duty as of late last night, the tweet said.

Early in the Saturday morning, thousands of locals gathered in Minneapolis to clean the streets on Saturday after a night of unrest.

Many of the locals and protesters raised their voices against racism.

"We are more than just being here for George Floyd, we are here for a series and a history of injustice against people of color in this country. It needs to end. And this needs the attention that is required for it to end. When the past, when less has been done, nothing has changed. This needs to change and this needs to end," said a protester.

"Bottom line is we are all trying for that justice, and the thing is they are going to bring more people in. It's not going to change the situation, people are still going to protest, people are still going to protest peacefully. And if they choose to use aggressive force, I'm sure they'll get met with it," said another protester.

New Yorkers continued with protest for a third day on Saturday, demanding justice over the death of Floyd.

Hundreds of protesters including African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans and other racial groups gathered in the Brooklyn borough of the city, marching and chanting slogans. At least two protesters were arrested by the police.

Protesters have also launched violent protests in front of the White House for two consecutive days, chanting "Hands up, don't shoot!" and "I can't breathe" while confronting with the police.

Police officers fired pepper spray, tear gas as well as rubber bullets towards protesters

The standoff continued with the number of protesters increasing to over 1,000, and hundreds of police officers reinforcing their servicemen, both more than the figures one day earlier.

Protesters waved posters, held their hands high and chanted slogans including Floyd's last words "I can't breathe." Some hurled objects at the police who were in riot gear, fueling tensions at the site.

Protesters clashed with police officers and pushed security barricades. Police used pepper spray onto them and held riot shields to push them back.

More riot police were deployed after protesters moved to the opposite side of Lafayette Park later Saturday night.

Floyd, aged 46, died on Monday after Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, held him down with a knee on his neck though he repeatedly pleaded, "I can't breathe," and "please, I can't breathe." Chauvin was arrested and charged with three-degree murder and manslaughter on Friday.

Floyd's plea before his death evoked African Americans' painful memories and sparked a nationwide cry for justice. In 2014, a cellphone recorded an unarmed black man, Eric Garner, repeatedly saying "I can't breathe" when a New York officer held him in a chokehold before his death in police custody. Since then, the plea has become a rallying cry at demonstrations against police misconduct across the country.
