The second pretrial hearing was held on Monday in the U.S. city of Minneapolis for the case of George Floyd, an African American who died after white police officer Derek Chauvin pressed knee on his neck for almost nine minutes.
Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer, was fired and arrested after Floyd's death. He was charged with second-degree murder on top of the third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter charges.
Three other former police officers involved in Floyd's death have also been fired and jailed, each facing the charge of aiding and abetting murder.
On Monday, Chauvin attended the 20-minute or so court hearing via video link while three other ex-officers appeared in person.
Family members of Floyd also attended the hearing.
"We see guilty. We see all of this, but this has to be proven. Everybody has to have a future out, now I understand that. So you have to respect the system. So going through the process is frustrating and hoping for justice. Because we don't know. So I think my nephew case is going to be a fight. This is going to be a heavy fight. I see it right away. It's going to be a fight," said Angela Harrelson, aunt of George Floyd.
"I'm not mad at anybody. I'm mad at the system, you know, the system should have had better order in place," said Salwyn Johns, Floyd's uncle.
At the hearing, Judge Peter Cahill announced that the next hearing will be held on September 11 and the tentative trial date will be March 8, 2021 for the four former police officers.
