Storyline

East China's Jiangxi Province is beefing up efforts to control rain-triggered floods which have wreaked havoc across vast stretches of the province, with more than 41,700 people having joined in the fight against the floods, aided by 537 sets of mechanical equipment.

Jiangxi Province raised its flood-control response level on Saturday from level II to level I, the top level of China's four-tier emergency response for floods.

The province has increased patrol forces for round-the-clock monitoring of risks along the embankments.

Affected by continuous rainfall, the water level of Chang River in Poyang County of Jiangxi Province continued to rise, resulting in dangers in many dikes including Wenguidao, Zhongzhou and Chongfu dams of the county.

Rainstorm also caused a landslide at the intersection of the Yangtze River and Poyang Lake on Sunday. Firefighters on patrol at the embankment noticed the collapse and responded immediately.

"This morning, the drone patrol found that there is a collapse on the back of the embankment during an inspection. We immediately reported the situation to the disaster relief headquarters so that materials were sent in time to reinforce the embankment," said Jiang Meng, leader of fire brigade of Lianxi District in Jiujiang City.

As the water level continues to rise, firefighters, militiamen and nearby villagers are raising dam with sandbags on the dikes.

"We will continue to patrol on the Dongsheng dam and protect the dam due to continuous strong winds, high waves and rising water level," said Jiang.

According to the prediction of the hydrological department, the water level of the Jiujiang section of the Yangtze River and Poyang Lake will continue to rise in the next two days, adding the pressure of flood control of Jiujiang City.

More than 100 firefighters have been dispatched to contain floods in the region. The Fire and Rescue Bureau of the Ministry has launched a plan for cross-regional reinforcement of flood conditions, and ordered the fire rescue forces in nearby Hubei, Anhui, and Zhejiang Provinces to be ready for adding Jiujiang City to battle floods.

Youdun Street Town in Poyang County of Shangrao City was also drenched by floods, leaving local residents trapped.

Upon knowing the situation, local firefighters rushed to the scene and evacuated the trapped people by boats.

At about 14:00, the firefighters discovered a 90 year-old man in Zhanggang Village. Two firefighters supported the elderly together, and another firefighter bowed his head and let the senior sit on his back, slowly transferring the elderly to a boat.

At about 15:00, the firefighters rescued a senior couple, of whom one is disabled.

The provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters said that 2,242 km of the 2,545 km of riverside and lakeside embankments in the province have seen water levels exceeding the warning marks.

Floods since July 6 have affected over 5 million people and damaged over 443,000 hectares of crops, according to the headquarters Saturday.
