The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Saturday that the COVID-19 pandemic still constitutes a public health emergency of international concern.
The WHO convened the fourth meeting of the Emergency Committee on Friday night to evaluate the global situation and provide advice on pandemic response.
Following the meeting, the committee unanimously agreed that the pandemic was a public health emergency, and global risk was still very high.
The committee encouraged individuals, young people in particular, and communities to remain vigilant in preventing and controlling the spread of COVID-19.
It also provided a series of advice to address the pandemic. In particular, it suggested the WHO cooperate with global and regional multi-lateral organizations and partners to support member states to maintain health care services and accelerate research on diagnosis tools, therapies, and vaccines.
The committee also suggested countries to fund coronavirus-related research, distribute diagnosis tools and vaccines fairly, and strengthen public health surveillance to identify cases and trace contacts.
Globally, as of 17:33 CEST, Aug 1, 2020, a total of 17,396,943 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 675,060 deaths, had been reported to the WHO, and Saturday alone saw 289,321 newly confirmed cases and 6,142 deaths, according to the organization’s official website.
