The real purpose hiding behind the United States delegation's visit to China's Taiwan region is too obvious to miss, and such wrong independence attempt will eventually end up as a farce, according to spokespersons from Chinese authorities on Wednesday.

Ma Xiaoguang, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, made the remarks after the delegation led by U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar arrived in Taiwan on Sunday in the name of enhancing anti-pandemic cooperation.

Azar has also signed a memorandum of understanding on medical and health cooperation with the Taiwan region during his visit with the region's leader Tsai Ing-wen.

The visit of the U.S. official to Taiwan violated the one-China principle and the provisions of three China-U.S. joint communiques, said Ma, noting that China firmly opposes the action.

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) was just trying to realize the real political purpose of their independence attempt, in the name of so-called "anti-pandemic cooperation," which is doomed to end as a farce, the spokesman said.

The spokesperson of China's National Health Commission (NHC) on the same day noted that Taiwan affairs are internal affairs of China which brook no foreign interference while responding to a query about Azar's visit, adding that the wrong acts of the U.S. have triggered serious damage to the health cooperation between China and the U.S.

The spokesman noted that China urges the U.S. side to abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of three China-U.S. joint communiques, stop official interactions and contact of all kinds with the Chinese region of Taiwan.

China and the U.S. should make joint efforts on carrying out constructive health cooperation, to ensure the interests, health and safety of peoples of the two nations as well as all people across the globe, the spokesman said.
