"This decision is reasonable and legal. In the past few days, Hong Kong has seen a third wave of the COVID-19 epidemic and the number of confirmed cases is still high every day. Therefore, we can't get voters to go out and vote on Sept. 6 as the risk of cross-infection is very high. So, the decision by the NPC Standing Committee is reasonable and legal. At the same time, it will enable the SAR government to concentrate on the epidemic prevention and control efforts and fight against the epidemic with all social sectors in the days to come."

Storyline

People from all walks of life in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), including a former HKSAR chief executive, said that the decision by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) on the continued operation of the sixth Legislative Council (LegCo) is necessary to ensure the normal operation of the legislature, ensure that Hong Kong will emerge victorious from the epidemic as soon as possible, and restore Hong Kong's prosperity and stability.

Leung Chun-ying, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and former chief executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) said that the decision is reasonable and legal.

"In the past few days, Hong Kong has seen a third wave of the COVID-19 epidemic and the number of confirmed cases is still high every day. At the same time, it will enable the SAR government to concentrate on the epidemic prevention and control efforts and fight against the epidemic with all social sectors in the days to come," said Leung.

Chiu Tsang Hok Wan, director of Henyep Development (Holdings) Limited., said that decision on postponing the LegCo election will enable the LegCo to perform its duties.

"Because the decision is out of good intention and will facilitate the work of the LegCo. Only in this way can we achieve the goal our Hong Kong people want," she said.

Chow Pak-chin, president of a think tank named Wisdom Hong Kong, said that the decision on LegCo election postponement by the NPC Standing Committee is out of concern for people's health and the normal operation of the LegCo.

"Because of the epidemic, we have to take care of the health of our citizens, so we have postponed this LegCo election for one year to Sept. 5 next year," said Chow.
