The number of newly confirmed COVID-19 infections dropped into the single digits for the first time since July 22 in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the regional health commission said Wednesday at a press conference.

According to Urumqi Municipal People's Government deputy secretary-general Liu Jun, Xinjiang reported nine new confirmed COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, and eight new asymptomatic cases, while eight people with asymptomatic infections were released from medical observation. Newly confirmed cases in the city dropped into the single digits for the first time since July 22, and the number of cured patients shows an upward trend, he added.

"From 00:00 on July 15 to 24:00 on August 11, a total of 263 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovering, and 89 people with asymptomatic infections were released from medical observation, bringing the total number to 352. The number of confirmed cases treated in hospitals and asymptomatic infections under medical observation continued to decline," said Liu.

"The State Council's expert team on joint prevention and control mechanisms of the epidemic response and the autonomous region's medical staff will further strengthen the analysis of cases discharged from hospitals, as well as summarize and optimize diagnosis and treatment plans, to provide experience and technical support for subsequent treatments and to continuously improve the cure rate," Liu added.

Speaking at the press conference, director of the local ecology and environmental bureau, Ge Guangfeng, explained how authorities are monitoring the disposable of medical waste and wastewater generated every day to ensure the safety and health of local residents and the protection of the environment.
